What to wear, you ask?
When you are preparing for a photo session, chances are you don’t do this all the time
and so it can be hard to figure out where to start.
One of the first questions that I get when planning for the day is what to wear. I think this can be one of the most important things to think about when getting ready, because the point of a professional photo session is to get images that make you feel your best.
I’ve put together a few tips about the things I’ve observed when photographing over the years and what I think work the best!
1. Patterns and Colors
Color is your friend. Having a great color pop can take your photo from nice to amazing! As long as you are wearing something interesting and eye catching, the background doesn’t really matter because the subject is so interesting . Color is life! You want these photos to also go with your personality and style, because these photos will be framed in your house and can really set the setting for a whole room. Sorry- that's a lot of pressure! lol But outfit is very important! And I would love to help you design the shoot with you-I am here for you!
I personally love neutrals with a pop of color- for instance: golds, creams, eggshell, deep yellows or deep maroons work really well with desert landscapes. For an urban shoot- Its fun to start with white and add in dark grey and a pop of color of your choice- like sage green..or if you are spunky try a more exciting color like orange or fuchsia. Anything to make a statement in your pics!
Try choosing a color scheme with a few different colors that everyone is allowed to work with.
The general theme could be cream with secondary colors of sage, and soft yellow, or everyone can wear something that has maroon and brown, or you could start with black and throw in accent colors of blue and grey.
I also have a list on AMAZON for basic photoshoot outfits-and a board on Pinterest that I send to all my clients.
I have posted those links BELOW.
** Extra little individual accessories on each person can make the photo session really personalized.
2. Accessories Do Matter
Details make things look more professional, and it does give the image a more cohesive and classy feel no matter what you’re wearing! Whether it’s a great necklace or a hat, these can really make your image pop.
For Children try to keep it simple. Don't overdo it. Have a few accessories like a cute hat or scarf, or combat boots. Bring your families style to the table. Have fun with it!
And Do not think that Sweet Stuffie or Teddie that your child brings everywhere with them isn't an accessory! If they carry something around long enough it become their accessory! And you will look back & be happy you brought it with to preserve that memory.
3. Dress like the Best You
You shouldn’t feel like anything you are wearing is too much, because on camera it looks awesome to have the extra pizazz. Hey, this photo shoot is YOUR time to stand out!
BUT, You really want to feel your best in whatever you choose and make sure it doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable and self-conscious, because it will show in your images. Get ready to party it up on your photo session!
For Children you do not want them uncomfortable. That brings grumpy attitudes. Dress them in their best but also think about them too. Which outfit does She/He love & always pick? Does She have a favorite tutu that she will soon outgrow? Remember Mini Sessions are just One outfit, so chose wisely. If you want to grab a tutu,or sweater,or extra shirt, or other props and carry them in your bag, this would be ideal, but we will not be stopping the session to do outfit changes.
This goes for Dads too! Dress him like he wants to be dressed! lol I know that is saying a lot- most would like to come to photo shoot in sweats and sports tee- But... pick something out a couple weeks before your session- then he will be excited too! You want your man feeling GQ in his fit and confident and comfortable!
4. Bring a Prop- something special to add some flair
Examples might be An umbrella, Rain boots, A special Stuffed animal, Bubbles, Sunglasses, Cute hats, Old Antique books, Tutus, Guitar, anything that you think showcases who you are and what you love.
